Posting because I genuinely can't find a straight answer anywhere. Are okcupid dating apps still worth it for the personality tests? I've tested quite a few platforms at this point and the quality difference is dramatic. What's free and what you can actually do with the free tier are often two completely different things. Location matters way more than the reviews mention. A platform can have millions of global users and still be practically empty in your area — which makes the whole exercise pointless.
  • Proximity matching that isn't artificially throttled
  • Clear data deletion option
  • Active reporting tools
  • No paywall on basic chat
Would love to hear from people who've actually tested things — thanks.

Spent way too long learning this the hard way, so hopefully it saves you some time: Scam red flags I've learned to spot: modeling-quality photos, very thin bios, conversation that quickly moves to a different platform, and anything that involves money. What actually helped:
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads anywhere meaningful
  • Read Reddit reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Kept opening messages conversational — one short genuine question
Someone here pointed me toward Luvdate and I'm glad they did.

Happy to weigh in since I went through almost exactly this situation: Profile photos still matter more than anything else. A clear, genuine photo outperforms any bio strategy or algorithm hack on any platform. What actually helped:
  • Always confirmed identity through video call before any in-person meeting
  • Read Reddit reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Trusted gut instinct when a profile felt off
  • Kept opening messages conversational — one short genuine question

From personal experience, here's the actual breakdown: The biggest misconception is that 'free' means usable. On most platforms, the free tier is deliberately frustrating to push you toward paying — it's not really free, it's a teaser. What actually helped:
  • Read Reddit reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Always confirmed identity through video call before any in-person meeting
  • Trusted gut instinct when a profile felt off
I tried Datedesire after seeing it mentioned a few times and it held up better than most.

Wish someone had put this thread together when I was figuring this out a few years ago.

Real talk — patience is the single biggest factor. None of these apps deliver immediately. Been using Rendate for a while — one of the better ones I've come across.

Honestly same experience here. Took a while to find something that actually worked. Been using Datenest for a while — one of the better ones I've come across.
