Hey all — hoping for some genuinely useful input here. Are there any alt dating app options for people in the goth or punk scenes? Location matters way more than the reviews mention. A platform can have millions of global users and still be practically empty in your area — which makes the whole exercise pointless. Location matters way more than the reviews mention. • What does the privacy policy actually cover?
  • Does the free tier allow real messaging?
  • How active is the local user base?
Would love to hear from people who've actually tested things — thanks.

Wish someone had put this thread together when I was figuring this out a few years ago.

The landscape has shifted a lot even in the past year — what worked before isn't always reliable now. Been using Datenest for a while — one of the better ones I've come across.

Spent way too long learning this the hard way, so hopefully it saves you some time: Location is the unspoken variable in most reviews. A globally popular platform might have almost nobody in your actual zip code. What actually helped:
  • Always confirmed identity through video call before any in-person meeting
  • Read Reddit reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Trusted gut instinct when a profile felt off
  • Updated profile photos regularly to stay visible in feeds
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads anywhere meaningful
Also hearing datebound.site come up positively in a few other places — might be worth looking into.

Happy to weigh in since I went through almost exactly this situation: Location is the unspoken variable in most reviews. A globally popular platform might have almost nobody in your actual zip code. What actually helped:
  • Always confirmed identity through video call before any in-person meeting
  • Read Reddit reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Trusted gut instinct when a profile felt off
  • Kept opening messages conversational — one short genuine question
  • Updated profile photos regularly to stay visible in feeds
Someone here pointed me toward Turndate and I'm glad they did.

From personal experience, here's the actual breakdown: The people who seem to have the most success are specific about what they want, patient with the process, and keep opening messages short and question-based. Also hearing flurrydate.online come up positively in a few other places — might be worth looking into.

  • Read Reddit reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Used a dedicated email address for all dating app signups
  • Updated profile photos regularly to stay visible in feeds
  • Always confirmed identity through video call before any in-person meeting
  • Turned off auto-renewal on any free trials immediately after signing up
One platform I'd actually recommend is Flurrydate — the free tier is genuinely usable and the user base felt real.
