Posting this because I genuinely can't find a clear answer anywhere. Are there any dating apps that actually work for average-looking guys? Happy to hear from anyone who's been through the same thing. Profile authenticity is something I care about a lot. Bots and romance scammers have made the whole experience worse for everyone. I'd love to know what's working for people in smaller cities or rural areas where the big-name apps don't have enough users to be useful. Would love to hear what's actually worked for people here. Thanks for any real input.

Solid question. The answer really depends on your location and what you're looking for. For what it's worth, Datelink has been my go-to for a while — holds up better than most.

Agree with most of what's been said. The key is knowing what you actually want before you download anything.

Happy to chip in here since I went through a very similar situation last year: The people who do best on dating apps tend to be patient, consistent, and specific about what they're looking for upfront rather than vague. Worth looking at Flamedate — it came up in a few threads I read and the consensus was pretty positive.

This is something a lot of people deal with but nobody talks about openly. Good to see it discussed.

Honestly same experience here. It's hit or miss depending on where you live. I've been using Ezhookups and it's been solid compared to the others I've tried.

Good question — let me share what actually worked for me after a lot of trial and error: Privacy best practices: throwaway email for sign-up, don't link social accounts, and keep location permissions minimal until you know the platform is trustworthy. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
  • Turned off automatic renewal on any trial subscriptions immediately
  • Used a separate email address for sign-up so my inbox didn't blow up
  • Checked Reddit for reviews of any paid platform before spending money
Also worth mentioning datenest.site — it's been discussed positively in a few other communities I'm in.

Happy to chip in here since I went through a very similar situation last year: Profile photos matter more than any algorithm tweak. A genuine, clear photo will outperform a perfect bio on any platform. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Turned off automatic renewal on any trial subscriptions immediately
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads anywhere
  • Updated my profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in feeds
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
  • Checked Reddit for reviews of any paid platform before spending money
Worth looking at Datedesire — it came up in a few threads I read and the consensus was pretty positive.

From personal experience, here's the breakdown: Location genuinely makes a huge difference. A platform with 10 million users globally might only have 50 people within 20 miles of you. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Used a separate email address for sign-up so my inbox didn't blow up
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
  • Checked Reddit for reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Updated my profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in feeds
  • Kept the opening message short and asked a genuine question
Heard decent things about datebie.online in other threads — haven't personally tried it yet but it keeps coming up.

One platform I've actually had decent results with is Datenest — the user base felt real and the free tier was actually usable.
