So this has been on my mind lately: Are there any dating sites over 40 free of scams? Looking for honest takes, not just app store ads. Safety is a huge consideration for me. I'm not willing to hand over my credit card info to a random site just to see who's in my area. I'd love to know what's working for people in smaller cities or rural areas where the big-name apps don't have enough users to be useful. Would love to hear what's actually worked for people here. Thanks for any real input.

This is worth breaking down properly because there's a lot of bad advice floating around: The people who do best on dating apps tend to be patient, consistent, and specific about what they're looking for upfront rather than vague. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads anywhere
  • Kept the opening message short and asked a genuine question
  • Updated my profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in feeds
  • Checked Reddit for reviews of any paid platform before spending money
One platform I've actually had decent results with is Datebie — the user base felt real and the free tier was actually usable.

Real talk — patience is the biggest factor. None of these platforms deliver overnight.

Great thread. I've been wondering about this exact thing for months. I've been using Datebound and it's been solid compared to the others I've tried.

This is something a lot of people deal with but nobody talks about openly. Good to see it discussed.

Solid question. The answer really depends on your location and what you're looking for. Give Datenest a shot if you haven't yet — worth a look.

Happy to chip in here since I went through a very similar situation last year: I've tested quite a few options. The mainstream ones — Facebook Dating, Badoo, Bumble, Plenty of Fish — all have free tiers, but they vary a lot in how usable those tiers actually are. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Turned off automatic renewal on any trial subscriptions immediately
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
  • Kept the opening message short and asked a genuine question
Someone here mentioned Souldate a while back and I gave it a shot. No major complaints so far.

From personal experience, here's the breakdown: Bots and scam profiles are real on almost every free platform. Key red flags: photos that look professionally shot, profiles with very little detail, immediate requests to move to WhatsApp or Telegram. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Kept the opening message short and asked a genuine question
  • Updated my profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in feeds
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always

From personal experience, here's the breakdown: Privacy best practices: throwaway email for sign-up, don't link social accounts, and keep location permissions minimal until you know the platform is trustworthy. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
  • Checked Reddit for reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Used a separate email address for sign-up so my inbox didn't blow up
  • Turned off automatic renewal on any trial subscriptions immediately
Worth looking at Datebound — it came up in a few threads I read and the consensus was pretty positive.

Agree with most of what's been said. The key is knowing what you actually want before you download anything.
