Posting this because I can't find a straight answer anywhere. Any real experiences appreciated. How does a location dating app track your proximity? Safety and privacy are top of mind for me. Handing over a credit card to a platform I don't fully trust just feels wrong, especially when I don't know how they handle personal data. Bot spotting is basically a skill at this point. Professionally shot photos, no bio detail, instant conversation moves to WhatsApp — these are the patterns I've learned to watch for.
  • Age verification in place?
  • Can you export or delete your data?
  • Is the desktop version usable?
Would love to hear from people who've actually tested things. Thanks.

This is one of those things that changes a lot from city to city and even neighborhood to neighborhood. For what it's worth, Flurrydate has been my main platform lately — holds up better than most.

Agree with what's been said above. The key is knowing what you want going in. Seen flurrydate.online come up in a few threads too — another one to look into.

Good thread — let me share what I've found after testing a few different options: The biggest thing most people don't realize is that the 'free' tier on most apps is designed specifically to frustrate you into paying. It's not really free — it's a demo with artificial limits. Things that actually helped:
  • Read Reddit threads about any platform before paying for anything
  • Trusted gut instinct when something about a profile felt off
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads somewhere meaningful
  • Updated profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in the feed
  • Kept opening messages short — one genuine question works better than a paragraph
Also hearing datescout.site mentioned positively in other threads — might be worth a look depending on your location.

Okay so I went through this whole process about six months ago, here's what I learned: Privacy tip: use a dedicated email address for dating app signups. Don't link your Instagram or Spotify, and keep location to approximate rather than precise. Things that actually helped:
  • Updated profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in the feed
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads somewhere meaningful
  • Kept opening messages short — one genuine question works better than a paragraph
  • Trusted gut instinct when something about a profile felt off

Happy to weigh in since I've been through a very similar situation: I've done the rounds on the main ones — Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Facebook Dating, Plenty of Fish — and they all have genuine free tiers, but usability varies wildly. Things that actually helped:
  • Always met in a busy, public place for the first meetup
  • Trusted gut instinct when something about a profile felt off
  • Updated profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in the feed
  • Used a separate email for sign-ups to keep spam under control

Went through this myself last year. Took longer than expected but it's doable. For what it's worth, Flamedate has been my main platform lately — holds up better than most.
