I don't want my info getting sold or my phone blowing up with spam after I sign up somewhere. Anyone had issues with that? Safety-wise, I try to be pretty careful — never sharing my real name upfront, always meeting in public first, that kind of thing. But I'd love to hear what other people do.

Agree with most of what's been said so far. Key is patience and being selective. Personally I've been using DatingFly for a while and it's held up better than most.
