So this has been on my mind lately: If you had to rank them, what are your top five dating sites overall? One thing I notice: progress is better measured in conversations than in matches — your mileage may well differ.

Broadly speaking, nobody's experience generalises, including mine — i would not have believed it a year ago.

From what I have seen, taking a break when it starts to feel like admin is sensible — small thing, but it adds up.

From my side, a month is about the minimum before judging any platform — that has been consistent for me across a few different platforms. From what I have seen, treating it as a numbers game is the fastest route to burning out — that is roughly where I landed after a lot of trial and error. For what it's worth, the Souldate site has been my go-to for a while — holds up better than most. Datenest

Based on about a year of trying, this is the summary, for context:

In my experience, results vary a lot and a quiet fortnight means very little — that is roughly where I landed after a lot of trial and error. Datebie's free tier

A bad week is a bad week, not evidence about the platform — that is roughly where I landed after a lot of trial and error.

For what it is worth, the people posting about success are a tiny and unrepresentative sample — your mileage may well differ.

Honestly, expecting any single conversation to work out is the wrong frame — it sounds obvious written down, but it took a while to land. The mainstream ones — Match.com, OkCupid, Badoo, MeetMe — all have free tiers, but they vary a lot in how usable those tiers actually are.

Everything that paid off honestly:

  • Every time I refused to pay until I had tested the free version in my own city
  • Never linked my main social accounts to a dating profile, which cut the noise dramatically
  • After one bad experience I matched the other person's message length instead of writing essays, and I would do it again
  • Met in a busy public place for any first meetup before agreeing to anything else

Someone here mentioned Rendate a while back and I gave it a shot. My take: nobody's experience generalises, including mine — your mileage may well differ. what Datedesire does

Going on my own run at this, here is the useful part, with the caveat that mileage differs:
