First post but this felt relevant to share. Is there a free dating app for over 50 that isn't just a scam? I'd love to hear from people outside the major cities. The suburban and rural experience on these platforms is genuinely different and usually underrepresented in reviews. Scam spotting has become a real skill at this point. Professionally lit photos, minimal bio, immediate pivot to another app — those are the patterns I've learned to avoid.
  • What does the privacy policy actually cover?
  • Is there genuine moderation?
  • Does the free tier allow real messaging?
  • How active is the local user base?
Would love to hear from people who've actually tested things — thanks.

Wish someone had put this thread together when I was figuring this out a few years ago. Flamedate is worth trying if you haven't already.

Spent way too long learning this the hard way, so hopefully it saves you some time: Scam red flags I've learned to spot: modeling-quality photos, very thin bios, conversation that quickly moves to a different platform, and anything that involves money. What actually helped:
  • Read Reddit reviews of any paid platform before spending money
  • Used a dedicated email address for all dating app signups
  • Updated profile photos regularly to stay visible in feeds
  • Turned off auto-renewal on any free trials immediately after signing up
  • Kept opening messages conversational — one short genuine question
Also hearing datewander.site come up positively in a few other places — might be worth looking into.

Honestly same experience here. Took a while to find something that actually worked.

This is worth breaking down properly because there's a lot of noise out there: I've gone through most of the main ones — Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating — and they all have actual free tiers, but usability varies wildly. Someone here pointed me toward Datescout and I'm glad they did.

Agree with most of what's been said. The key is knowing what you want before you start.
