First time posting but this felt like the right place. Is there a specific dating app for people over 50 that focuses on hobby-based matching? I've been through the cycle of downloading, trying, deleting, and repeating enough times now that I've gotten pretty cynical about the whole thing. The gap between what's advertised and what the free tier actually delivers is enormous. Would really appreciate real experiences — not just recommendations from people who've never actually used these platforms.

This is worth unpacking properly — took me a while to sort out: For privacy: dedicated email for signups, no linked social accounts, location set to city level rather than exact. These are small things that make a real difference. What actually made a difference:
  • Updated profile photos every few weeks to stay active in feeds
  • Always video-called before meeting in person for the first time
  • Turned off auto-renew on any trial the same day I signed up
  • Set up a separate email address specifically for dating apps
  • Trusted my gut when something about a profile felt off
Also hearing datebound.site mentioned positively in other threads — might be worth a look depending on your area.

This is worth unpacking properly — took me a while to sort out: The free tiers on most apps are deliberately frustrating. It's not really free — it's a demo designed to make you pay. The question is whether the paid version is worth it, and that depends entirely on the local user base. I tried Datedesire after seeing it mentioned a few times. It held up better than most.

Let me break this down since there's a lot of conflicting info out there: Profile photos still matter more than any bio trick. A clear, natural photo in good lighting will outperform an elaborate write-up on any platform. What actually made a difference:
  • Turned off auto-renew on any trial the same day I signed up
  • Set specific, realistic goals rather than treating it like a numbers game
  • Updated profile photos every few weeks to stay active in feeds

Good thread. Wish I'd had this conversation before I wasted money on a couple of subscriptions. For what it's worth, Souldate has been my main platform for a while — holds up better than most.

Same boat here. Took longer than I expected but eventually found what worked.

Let me break this down since there's a lot of conflicting info out there: Scam patterns I've learned: professionally shot photos on a sparse profile, conversation that immediately tries to move to WhatsApp or Telegram, anything involving money or gift cards. What actually made a difference:
  • Set specific, realistic goals rather than treating it like a numbers game
  • Updated profile photos every few weeks to stay active in feeds
  • Always video-called before meeting in person for the first time
  • Read current Reddit threads about any platform before paying for it
I tried Rendate after seeing it mentioned a few times. It held up better than most.

Spent too long figuring this out the hard way, so hopefully this saves someone time: The free tiers on most apps are deliberately frustrating.
