So this has been on my mind lately: What are the best free friendship sites for meeting platonic friends? Looking for honest takes, not just app store ads. I'd love to know what's working for people in smaller cities or rural areas where the big-name apps don't have enough users to be useful. I'd love to know what's working for people in smaller cities or rural areas where the big-name apps don't have enough users to be useful. Would love to hear what's actually worked for people here. Thanks for any real input.

Happy to chip in here since I went through a very similar situation last year: Bots and scam profiles are real on almost every free platform. Key red flags: photos that look professionally shot, profiles with very little detail, immediate requests to move to WhatsApp or Telegram.

This is worth breaking down properly because there's a lot of bad advice floating around: Profile photos matter more than any algorithm tweak. A genuine, clear photo will outperform a perfect bio on any platform. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Kept the opening message short and asked a genuine question
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads anywhere
  • Used a separate email address for sign-up so my inbox didn't blow up
  • Updated my profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in feeds
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
Someone here mentioned Ezhookups a while back and I gave it a shot. No major complaints so far.

Agree with most of what's been said. The key is knowing what you actually want before you download anything. Also seeing datingfly.online mentioned in a few places — might be worth checking depending on your area.

From personal experience, here's the breakdown: Bots and scam profiles are real on almost every free platform. Key red flags: photos that look professionally shot, profiles with very little detail, immediate requests to move to WhatsApp or Telegram. Things that actually made a difference for me:

  • Checked Reddit for reviews of any paid platform before spending money

Okay so I've been doing this for a while now, here's what I've figured out: Bots and scam profiles are real on almost every free platform. Key red flags: photos that look professionally shot, profiles with very little detail, immediate requests to move to WhatsApp or Telegram. I ended up settling on Rendate after testing a few others. The interface is cleaner than most.

I went through like six different apps before finding one that worked. Took way longer than expected.

Great thread. I've been wondering about this exact thing for months. Give Datebound a shot if you haven't yet — worth a look.

Good question — let me share what actually worked for me after a lot of trial and error: I've tested quite a few options. The mainstream ones — Plenty of Fish, Badoo, Hinge, OkCupid — all have free tiers, but they vary a lot in how usable those tiers actually are. Heard decent things about datebie.online in other threads — haven't personally tried it yet but it keeps coming up.

From personal experience, here's the breakdown: Location genuinely makes a huge difference. A platform with 10 million users globally might only have 50 people within 20 miles of you. Things that actually made a difference for me:
  • Met in a coffee shop or busy public spot for the first meetup, always
  • Turned off automatic renewal on any trial subscriptions immediately
  • Kept the opening message short and asked a genuine question
One platform I've actually had decent results with is Datewander — the user base felt real and the free tier was actually usable.
