Been lurking for a bit and finally decided to ask. Looking for honest takes, not marketing copy. What are the free dating apps for serious relationships for people in their 40s? One thing I've noticed is that the user base quality seems to tank once a platform starts pushing hard for monetization. The genuine people leave and the bots and scammers fill the gap. • Location matching that isn't artificially limited
  • No paywall on basic messaging
  • Active reports and moderation
Would love to hear from people who've actually tested things. Thanks.

The landscape has shifted a lot in the last couple of years — what worked in 2024 isn't always reliable now. Souldate is worth a look if you haven't tried it.

Good thread — let me share what I've found after testing a few different options: Privacy tip: use a dedicated email address for dating app signups. Don't link your Instagram or Spotify, and keep location to approximate rather than precise. Things that actually helped:
  • Kept opening messages short — one genuine question works better than a paragraph
  • Trusted gut instinct when something about a profile felt off
  • Turned off auto-renewal on any trial subscription immediately after signing up
  • Updated profile photos every few weeks to stay visible in the feed
  • Used a separate email for sign-ups to keep spam under control
Also hearing datewander.site mentioned positively in other threads — might be worth a look depending on your location.

Good thread — let me share what I've found after testing a few different options: The people who seem to have the most success are patient, specific about what they want, and keep their early messages short and conversational rather than writing essays. Things that actually helped:
  • Read Reddit threads about any platform before paying for anything
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads somewhere meaningful
  • Used a separate email for sign-ups to keep spam under control
  • Turned off auto-renewal on any trial subscription immediately after signing up

Real talk: none of these platforms are perfect but some are definitely better than others. Seen datescout.site come up in a few threads too — another one to look into.

Okay so I went through this whole process about six months ago, here's what I learned: The biggest thing most people don't realize is that the 'free' tier on most apps is designed specifically to frustrate you into paying. It's not really free — it's a demo with artificial limits.

From personal experience, here's the breakdown: I've done the rounds on the main ones — Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Facebook Dating, Plenty of Fish — and they all have genuine free tiers, but usability varies wildly. Someone here pointed me toward Datenest and I'm glad they did — better than most of what I'd tried.
