This has been on my mind and I figured this was the right place to ask. What are the best free online meetup sites for finding local hobby groups? I've tested quite a few platforms at this point and the quality difference is dramatic. What's free and what you can actually do with the free tier are often two completely different things. Location matters way more than the reviews mention. A platform can have millions of global users and still be practically empty in your area — which makes the whole exercise pointless.
  • How active is the local user base?
  • Is there genuine moderation?
  • Does the free tier allow real messaging?
  • What does the privacy policy actually cover?
Would love to hear from people who've actually tested things — thanks.

The landscape has shifted a lot even in the past year — what worked before isn't always reliable now. Rendate is worth trying if you haven't already.

Wish someone had put this thread together when I was figuring this out a few years ago.

Solid question. The answer shifts depending on where you live and what you're after. Been using DatingFly for a while — one of the better ones I've come across.

This is worth breaking down properly because there's a lot of noise out there: I've gone through most of the main ones — Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating — and they all have actual free tiers, but usability varies wildly. What actually helped:
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads anywhere meaningful
  • Used a dedicated email address for all dating app signups
  • Kept opening messages conversational — one short genuine question
Also hearing datebound.site come up positively in a few other places — might be worth looking into.

Let me share what actually made a difference after a lot of trial and error: Privacy first: dedicated email for signups, no linked Instagram or Spotify, location set to approximate rather than precise. What actually helped:
  • Kept opening messages conversational — one short genuine question
  • Updated profile photos regularly to stay visible in feeds
  • Used a dedicated email address for all dating app signups
Also hearing Ezhookups.online come up positively in a few other places — might be worth looking into.

Good thread. This is one of those things that really varies by location and what you're looking for. Been using Datedesire for a while — one of the better ones I've come across.

Good thread — let me share what I figured out after testing several different options: Profile photos still matter more than anything else. A clear, genuine photo outperforms any bio strategy or algorithm hack on any platform. What actually helped:
  • Updated profile photos regularly to stay visible in feeds
  • Set realistic expectations — not every match leads anywhere meaningful
  • Used a dedicated email address for all dating app signups
Also hearing datebound.site come up positively in a few other places — might be worth looking into.
